Olive Smith, a third-year biology PhD student at Stanford University, is deeply immersed in her research on pancreatic cancer, the disease that claimed her mother's life. Olive’s best friend, Anh, wants to date Olive's ex but feels guilty about it. To alleviate her friend’s guilt, Olive decides she needs a fake boyfriend.

In a heated moment, Olive impulsively kisses a guy to comfort her best friend and pave the way for her to date her ex. The guy Olive ends up kissing is Adam, her professor, who happens to be in need of a girlfriend to secure the funding he desperately needs for his research.

Recognizing their mutual benefit, Olive and Adam agree to fake date each other. Both are struggling to secure funding for their respective research projects, and they navigate their fake dating arrangement with this shared goal in mind. As they continue their charade, the world conspires to put them in situations that increasingly blur the lines between fake and real.

Will Olive and Adam be able to recognize when their pretend feelings start to become genuine? Can their fabricated relationship evolve into something real amidst their academic and personal challenges? Only time will tell if their arrangement will lead to true love or remain a convenient façade.
